Mesoscopic acquisition

This PICsL platform combines the expertise and advanced technologies of the IBDM, CIML, and INMED facilities for mesoscopic imaging.

High-resolution 3D imaging with light sheet microscopy

Light sheet microscopy, often referred to as single plane illumination microscopy (SPIM), is a rapidly emerging technology that combines optical sectioning with multiple-view imaging to observe tissues and living organisms with impressive resolution.

Unlike conventional widefield and confocal fluorescence microscopy, light sheet microscopy illuminates only the plane being observed, protecting surrounding regions from bleaching.

Applications

This technique is particularly suited for large-scale fluorescence imaging, enabling researchers to visualize whole samples with minimal photodamage and photobleaching.

Light sheet microscopy provides excellent optical sectioning and three-dimensional imaging capabilities, making it ideal for observing live organisms or tissues treated with transparency-enhancing chemical methods.

Available systems:

At IBDM:

  • Zeiss Z1: Dedicated to whole live sample acquisition in fluorescence, offering tomography-like 3D imaging with high resolution.
  • Blaze System from Miltenyi: Designed for large fluorescence acquisitions with chemical transparency treatment, capable of handling samples several centimeters in size.

At CIML:
